The success of your Invisalign treatment depends upon you regularly wearing your aligners. But what happens when they simply don’t fit? After all, if you can’t wear them, how can they work their magic? If you’re struggling to get your trays on, don’t give up on your smile. Here are a few things you can try to make them go on easier, and what you should do if they don’t.
Choose Chews
Invisalign makes a product you may have heard of called a Chewie. To use them, you simply bite down on them as you’re putting on your aligners. This can help to push your trays into their proper place. Just bite down starting at the back of your arch, slowly sliding the chewie forward and biting until the aligner is completely in place. Chewies are reusable, too, so you can do this as often as you need, even multiple times a day or week.
Backtracking
If using a chewie still doesn’t help, you may need to take a step back and switch to your previous aligner. Do not do this until you’ve gotten the okay from your dentist, however, as it could set your treatment plan back.
If you notice you are struggling regularly with getting a proper aligner fit, take a closer look at how much time you’re actually wearing them. In order for your treatment to be successful, they should be on for at least 22 hours a day. If you exceed your two hour break, it could slow your progress and set back your timeline.
Work it Out
Your dentist may recommend bite exercises during your treatment. Sometimes if you fail to do them as prescribed, it can make it harder for your front teeth to move, which in turn can make it harder for your aligners to fit according to schedule. Thus, be sure to do these exercises exactly as instructed. Devoting just a few minutes to them each day can help ensure that your treatment stays on track, saving you ample time at the end.
Other Reasons Your Aligners Might Not Fit
Aligner damage is another reason why your Invisalign trays may not fit. To prevent this from happening, never wear them while you’re eating or drinking anything but cold or room-temperature water, as hot foods and beverages can cause them to melt or warp.
Remember, in order for your treatment to work as planned, you should be wearing your aligners exactly as prescribed by your dentist. If none of the above tips helps ensure a better, easier fit, contact your dentist today for further assistance.
