Tooth loss is an unfortunately common problem that can cause a range of negative oral and overall health consequences. Thankfully, modern dentures are so comfortable that you might forget that they’re there and so incredibly lifelike that casual observers won’t even notice that you’re wearing them. However, it’s essential to care for your appliance properly if you want it to stay white, bright, and beautiful. Here’s how to keep your dentures in excellent shape so they can look great and work well for as long as possible.
How Can I Prevent Denture Stains?
There are a few things you’ll need to do to keep your dentures in excellent shape. These are:
Clean your dentures daily
It’s important to remove and thoroughly clean your dentures on a daily basis. When you do this, begin by filling the basin of your sink with water and placing folded towels across your countertop to create a cushion in case you drop your appliance. Then, carefully remove your dentures and thoroughly clean them using dental floss, a soft-bristled toothbrush, and non-abrasive toothpaste. Be sure to clean the acrylic gums and the underside of the appliance to eliminate lingering plaque and food debris.
Soak your dentures nightly
The mouth needs at least eight hours away from the dentures every day so it has time to rest and clean itself, and most patients remove their appliance at night before they go to bed. Neglecting to remove your dentures daily will lead to unsightly buildups of plaque and tartar, bad breath, and nasty oral infections. When you remove your appliance for longer periods of time, always soak it in an approved denture cleanser to prevent it from drying out and warping.
Avoid stain-causing foods and beverages
While dentures are stain-resistant, they are not invincible and can become stained due to frequent and prolonged exposure to darkly colored items such as coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and dark sauces. Take care to limit your intake of foods and beverages like these, drink plenty of water while enjoying them, and practice proper oral hygiene daily.
What if My Dentures Have Become Stained?
If the stains in your dentures are not responding to your normal oral hygiene practices, your dentist may be able to address them by treating the discoloration with special tools and polishing your appliance until it looks like new. This usually only takes a few minutes, and most denture patients require professional denture cleanings only twice a year. While this will help your smile stay beautiful, it also gives your dental professional the chance to monitor your oral health, address any issues, and recommend better hygiene practices.
Dentures are a significant investment that can pay massive dividends for your self-esteem, oral health, and quality of life. Giving your appliance excellent care can keep it presentable and in working order for up to ten years.
